Not one of my favourites, he makes her seem a bit like David Copperfield's Dora? And what was the fascination with sudden young death? Honey, The Leader of the Pack, Jonny Remember Me, and Terry Jacks' classic, Seasons in the Sun. I think there were many more...I don't think it's quite such a big thing these days, she says, trying to pretend she still listens to pop music!
Lately I have been listening to Radio 1 - a lot of it is still there vaguely dressed up as empowerment. These are the performing industries and sex plus peril of whatever nature sells.
I can understand why it might not be one of your favourites, but I am strangely attracted to sudden young death songs. Have you ever come accross "That Little Kid sister of Mine? A cheerful Country and Western singalong popularised by Gene Autry - "She was only seven when she was called to Heaven"
I was wondering about the way that Honey is presented in the Goldsborough song - "She crashed the car and she was sad and so afraid that I'd be mad - but what the heck" and "she.. slipped and almost hurt herself and I laughed until I cried"
Anyway - I'm probably coming accross like an obsessive. its been a tough day - and your post brightened up my dinner hour. So thanks.
Very trashy (kitch) agreed - try living that life though. A lot of things that are awful have appeal from the comfort of armchair and safety. I suppose it is how the entertainment industry functions.
Sadly, yes. I have tried to cut down on the amount of murder documentaries that I watch, they can't do a lot for my mental health, they are largely voyeuristic and sordid, and I do feel a bit of shame at enjoying them. But I can't stay away for long.
When I was a kid my father had two Beatles albums, Rubber Soul & Revolver, so they were and are favourites of mine. Recently I actually really *listened* to the words to Run For Your Life - a very catchy tune but... yikes.
It wasn't one of the hits off the album. "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man". "Baby I'm determined and I'd rather see you dead". Etc. Not exactly typical Beatles fare.
Didn't Jack Jones have his own TV show in the seventies? I'm sure my mum had one of his LPs.
I used to have a Dionne Warwick compilation with Wives and Lovers on it. Oooh those lyrics 😆
I know he sang the theme to ‘The Love Boat’ - a childhood classic for me because there was a character called Julie.😂
So many of them had their own TV shows back then though, he probably did.
The Love Boat! Gosh, remember that! I never knew that was Jack!
I love that song. I always hear it in a very tongue in cheek way although at the time it probably wasn’t.
I think they did irony then - definitely!
Do you think it was meant ironically? I'd like to think so, but I have a horrible feeling it was genuine
There is no real way of knowing but it’s easy to suppose meaning is fixed and that the context we take something in is universal when it isn’t at all.
Clearly there was plenty that was revolting….
A lovely piece of writing about a now very dated piece of writing. Bacharach abd David's stuff was superb though wasn't it.
I would love to read your thoughts on "Honey" made popular by Bobby Goldsborough. Not a Bacharach/David number - but of the same era.

There’s a huge market for it, clearly.

Oh my goodness, I've never heard of that song. I guess it doesn't get played much!

I'm a big fan of Josephine Tey.
