How fascinating - had never heard of her and somehow managed to miss South Riding on TV also; must seek them out!

I found you can still get the DVD - we re-watched it the other day. Mrs Beddows is Penelope Wilton, she's lovely in it, as is Douglas Henshall. When the BBC did drama properly and didn't mess about with it (cf Great Expectations...!.)

Wonderful, thank you Sarah. There was a Winifred Holtby employed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf’s Hogarth Press between 1927-28. Could it be the same one..?

Yes, they worked together, and Holtby wrote the first critical memoir of Woolf in 1935 (I've just googled it!)

I love Winifred Holtby. I first encountered her when I read English at Somerville College. An amazing woman and so sad for us all that she died so young. It made my day to see her name mentioned. Thanks Sarah.

I'm so pleased - I've also got two completely new readers for her today!

A significant author robbed, by disease, of the plaudits she should have received for her work and would certainly have continued to win for the books that never were. By the way - who was the illustrator of the paperback front cover you included?

Its 'Springtime in Eskdale' by J. McIntosh Patrick, courtesy of the Walker Art Gallery
