I had not read any of Mary's poetry before: it's very reminiscent of John Betjeman's style, isn't it? - and no surprise that they were such great friends.

Why do we know so much about the First Ladies of America but very little about the wives of the Prime Ministers of Britain? Thank you, this was fascinating.

I think First Ladies have a much more ceremonial, public role. The wives of Prime Ministers have the right to stay private citizens, and don't have to put their heads above the parapet. Mary was particularly private, but a lovely woman, and a talented poet
