Really enjoyed this, thank you. Have you read any of Eleanor's work? It sounds like some of it could offer a useful framework or vocabulary even for today.

Such an important woman. For those who like a podcast, Journey through Time's Sarah Churchwell and David Olusoga talked about Eleanor Rathbone recently. https://open.spotify.com/episode/6A6u9lUz8YXKWXb9HktQLj?si=nI5NGUtRRRe_qsc6la_wgw

I'm fascinated by these ideas that were coming out about allowances for wives and mothers - I'm writing about Kathleen Thompson Norris at the moment and some of this comes into play in her books too (although US based) - in one there's a character who says 'I've got my own theories about putting motherhood on a different basis, a business basis. I want you to let me pay you—as the State ought to pay you—three hundred a year for every child you bear'.

Fascinating to learn about Eleanor, thank you, Sarah. My ancestors on my mum's side were from Merseyside, some of them dockworkers, so what you say about her interest in the welfare of families of seafarers and dockworkers is really interesting, thinking of my own family's history. I know one great uncle died following an industrial accident at the docks, leaving my great aunt widowed.

Look forward to part 2.
